On every fall Saturday and Sunday, in the hours before college
and pro football teams hit the field, armies of fans descend
on stadium lots and prepare for the game in style. Decked
out in team gear and toting full-on portable kitchens they
take over the tarmac and psyche themselves up for the big
game.
Football and food have gone hand-in-hand since the first
college football game in 1869 between Rutgers and Princeton
universities, when it was customary for people to engage
in a wild game and fish dinner before games. People began
to say "tailgate" because many used the backs of trucks
and old station wagons to have their parties.
